TVK Chief Vijay met TN governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekkar at the Lok Bhavan, staking claim to form the next government. Vijay was accompanied by senior party leaders, including general secretary N. Anand and key functionaries such as K.A. Sengottaiyan and Aadhav Arjuna.
The move comes shortly after the Congress extended its support to the party following the recent Assembly elections, effectively severing the party's more than twenty-year alliance with the DMK. The DMK has accused the Congress of backstabbing it, in a bid to retain power.
In the recently concluded 2026 Assembly Elections, TVK emerged as the single largest party securing a total of 108 seats. The DMK and the AIADMK were relegated to the second and third positions respectively.
However, TVK fell short of an absolute majority needed to form a government alone. Vijay and other senior party leaders are in consultation with other parties, trying to up the ante and cross the 118 mark needed to form the government. The Congress has extended its support to TVK on the condition that the party will not collaborate with forces that seek to undermine the Constitution.
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which holds two seats, has confirmed receiving a request for support but is yet to take a final decision, pending internal consultations. Left parties are also yet to make a final decision regarding coalition with TVK.
Reports are coming in stating that Vijay and his council of Ministers are likely to be sworn in tomorrow in a grand function.
The election outcome has significantly altered Tamil Nadu’s long-standing political landscape, traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. Former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has stepped down following his loss of the Kolathur Assembly constituency, which he represented for 15 years, to TVK's V S Babu. Stalin has already handed in his resignation.
